Our interest in doing quality restorative dentistry, lead us to realize that many of the chronic tooth problems we were treating were related to a bruxing or tooth grinding. Molars were developing cracks or the enamel was wearing or chipping off, good teeth were sensitive or getting loose. Just fixing a sensitive or broken tooth with a crown or root canal many times didn’t solve the underlying stress the patient was manifesting in their teeth. And we were frustrated when a patient had post treatment tooth sensitivity. It became apparent that the bite was a wild card that needed closer examination. As we studied advanced dentistry, we learned that tension headaches and clicking popping jaw joints were all related to tooth wear. They all have something in common. What they all have in common is hyperactive jaw muscle activity. Once we learned how to control clenching, we took the pressure off of the teeth, jaw joint, and muscle tension headaches. We are now enjoying a lot of success in treating teeth, but also the other conditions listed above.
We now use a variety of night guards, occlusal splints, jaw joint doppler and MRI, among other things to diagnose and treat clenching problems. It all starts with a comprehensive examination a diagnosis. Quality exam starts means a quality diagnosis. Quality diagnosis means a quality treatment.
It is incredible how many of our patients have spent thousands of dollars and time trying to get a diagnosis and treatment for undiagnosed TMD.
